Jonathan Strachan, Don Aitken, Justin BarberConsultants at Sewell Moorhouse are defying traditional recruitment methods when it comes to recruiting professionals into Practice. Whilst the majority of recruitment businesses in this sector find their candidates by cold calling to entice them away from their current roles, Don Aitken and his team - Jonathan Strachan and Justin Barber - are focusing their energy on advising and working with the wider Professional market.

Don Aitken said, “I wanted to approach Practice completely differently to the competition. Our approach is professional and takes the long-term view with an emphasis on trust and added
value.” The Professional Practice market is candidate driven but Sewell Moorhouse insist that unlike the competition they will never headhunt candidates out of other Firms, 90% of their candidates are referred which means that they are always working with focussed, controlled and motivated people right through to Partner level.

Don said, “What makes us different is that we are useful to clients even when they are not recruiting. Our contact base throughout the wider Professional market and our enthusiasm for developing business allows us to do plenty of pro-active work & benchmarking for our clients away from just recruitment. Being visible, credible and professional makes us something of a candidate magnet.”

The change in approach is working for the Professional Practice team at Sewell Moorhouse. Not satisfied with offices in Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster and Manchester, they plan to establish a presence in a further 6 cities across the UK by 2010.

The Professional Practice market looks healthy according to Don. “The current economic uncertainty does not seem to have slowed us down at all. Longer term I am confident it will impact little on our business. Good people are always able to move as employers look to increase efficiencies. If you are immersed in the market and work with the top candidates you
should be fine. High volume low quality recruiters should be wary.”
