Cliff SewellWe are well into the New Year but have you already fallen back into the daily routine you left behind at the end of 2007?!!! Many of us start a New Year full of excitement about what we are going to achieve over the next 12 months; we make resolutions involving diets, detox, getting fit and spending more time with the family. One subject high up on the list is that of work and careers and how we are going to make it better this year. By about the 20th January most resolutions have gone by the wayside and we leave it for another year.

Well DON’T. I am not going to preach on about any of the other resolutions but the one concerning your career and job I will comment on. I have spent the last 15 years working with individuals who have taken this step and have seen some great rewards. This is the one thing that will affect every other part of your life basically because of the amount of time you spend doing it. Make this year the one where you make a difference.

So how do you go about it? First of all start away from work and decide what you really want out of life and then make your job/career fit around it. I meet so many people who believe they want to be on the fast track career ladder but it just does not fit with life away from work and eventually you will be forced to make a decision. Well put yourself in control and then you can make the decisions. We all sit down and plan a 2 week holiday with great vigour and make sure all is in place before we even set off, well do the same with your career/job.

Ask yourself the following – What do I want out of my job? What do I enjoy doing in my job? Where do I want it to take me? How many sacrifices am I prepared to make? and start to build a picture of what you want. Then you can move onto the details such as – How much do I want to earn? Where do I want to live? What sector do I want to work in? How high do I want to go up the corporate ladder? and so on.

In my role I meet a vast range of individuals and the one constant in the people who have achieved their aims and goals is that there was a plan. It almost sounds a bit American ra ra and for that I do not apologise because from a selfish point of view it has worked for me!!!

If the above does touch a nerve or even stir a little bit of excitement inside, do something about it; believe it or not the planning stage can be fun. As a recruiters and Directors of a business with over 50 people both Ben and I have some real hand experience of this process so feel free to contact us; we are more than happy to spend time getting the foundations in place that may just help you get rid of that Sunday night feeling and enable you to take control of your career.
