Ben SequerraWhilst the reality of the Apprentice and Dragons Den is questionable, Kate Hopkins turning down the offer by Alan Sugar of a 50/50 chance of a £100k salary interested me as it highlights one of the crucial aspects of recruitment. Having taken extensive time and resources and selecting the preferred individual through numerous rounds of interviews, how do you ensure the person will take the position if offered?

It’s never been more important to get your recruitment strategy right and I truly believe that the benefits of working with an experienced recruitment consultant have never been so pertinent. By the time you get to job offer stage you will not risk losing a candidate due to unforeseen circumstances if your agency has done its job properly. The continual success of Sewell Moorhouse is based on the experience and retention of its staff. It is coming up to my 10th year in recruitment on August 15th and my colleague Anne Brady has 15 years experience, both of us have spent the majority of our careers in South Yorkshire which many clients find invaluable.

Our database of candidates is extensive – but it’s not a numbers game. It’s about ensuring the right strategic fit for both parties, so our candidates won’t do a Katie Hopkins!

Pro South Yorkshire

Some interesting parts of my role as a director are partnering other organisations, developing careers for people both internally and externally and helping to promote my home city of Sheffield and South Yorkshire. It was really pleasing to attend an excellent Pro SY young professionals evening at Menzels which illustrated the thriving careers for young people in Sheffield and how important it is for companies to work together in the region to boost the local economy. It is an honour for us to sponsor the South Yorkshire Dealmaker’s Awards this week and further celebrate the excellent work of businesses in the area.

Politics and Business

It seems Gordon Brown and Nicholas Sarkosy have learnt the value of collaboration by offering cabinet posts to opposition party members and let’s hope Gordon Brown follows up his promise to bring more business people into the Government. By looking at other organisations as partners rather than competition we may be able to create synergies which can only help to strengthen all parties. By doing this with local companies we will further be able to boost the local economy and make it better for all. A crucial part of my role as Director is ensuring we apply a win-win approach with all organisations as this is the only viable long term strategy for an independent regionally focused business like us acting in a highly competitive industry.
